Motor Cycle Licence Categories

Lightweight Motorcycle Licence (A1 for age 17+):

To obtain this licence, you must be a minimum of 17 years old and have already completed your compulsory basic training (CBT) and have passed your DVSA theory test.

You must then take both Modules 1 & 2 of your practical test on a motorcycle that qualifies for A1 entitlement. Module 1 will be carried out at a Test Centre. Once you have passed this you are then able to take the on-road part (Module 2).

This test must be taken on a 120cc - 125cc motorcycle of not more than 11kW and be capable of at least 55mph.

Once you have passed this test you are able to ride a lightweight motorcycle of up to 125cc, carry passengers and ride on motorways.

Standard A2 Motorcycle Licence (A2 for age 19+):

To obtain this licence you must be a minimum of 19 years old and have already completed your compulsory basic training (CBT) and have passed your DVSA theory test.

All the information above regarding Modules 1 and 2 applies and this test must be taken on at least a 395cc motorcycle of not more than 35kW.

Direct Access Scheme (DAS) (age 24+):

This is the quickest way to a full motorcycle licence which will allow you to ride a machine of any size and power. You must a minimum of 24 years old, have already completed your CBT, the DVSA theory test and you must take both Modules 1 & 2 of your test on a motorcycle of over 595cc and that produces at least 54bhp or 40kw.
